Interactions with AI is a collaborative research and creative project exploring how movement-based artificial intelligence can transform participatory performance and cultural experience. Developed by Alexander Whitley Dance Company in collaboration with East London Dance, London College of Fashion, University of East London and the Bartlett Shcool of Architecture, the project centres on Bhangra as a lens for examining how AI can represent, transmit, and reimagine social dance traditions.

Through community consultation, motion capture, and AI-driven pose detection and motion matching, the team created an interactive prototype in which participants engage with a responsive digital dance partner. The system translates live movement into dynamic avatar responses, enabling a playful, embodied dialogue between human and machine.

At its core, the project investigates how AI can support intergenerational exchange, cultural expression, and wellbeing, while addressing questions of authenticity and representation. By combining artistic practice, technical innovation, and lived experience, Interactions with AI offers a new model for inclusive, culturally grounded immersive art.
